🌟 Celebrating Excellence in Student Support at HMS! 🌟

#BedfordCountySchools wants to send a huge #Congratulations to #HarrisMiddleSchool's school counselor Matt Russell, who was recently named Social Emotional Learning & Mental Health Team/School Counselor of the Year! 🏆💛💙

Mr. Russell goes above and beyond for #students. He is the middle school lead for Response to Intervention A2+B2, mentors interns and supports colleagues across Harris and BCS and organizes school-wide initiatives like canned food drives. He’s also made a lasting impact as a coach, inspiring students on the tennis, volleyball and football teams while also leading annual trips to Washington DC for 8th grade students the past 5 years.

From the classroom to the playing field, Coach Russell makes a difference in every student’s life! 👏

🌟 Celebrating Exceptional Growth! 🌟

At their November school board meeting, #BedfordCountySchools recognized outstanding 1st and 2nd grade teachers whose students reached Level 4 and Level 5 growth on the Universal Reading Screener for the 2024–2025 school year! 📚✨

Each fall, #students take the Universal Reading Screener, which measures key literacy skills including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. They take it again in the spring, and the results highlight just how much students have grown.

These teachers have guided their students to remarkable growth, showing the power of dedication, effective instruction and a strong commitment to literacy success. #Congratulations to these exceptional educators! Their work is helping students become confident, capable readers every day.

Every year at #HarrisMiddleSchool, Mrs. Lawell, our school librarian, ask the students of #HMS to participate in a letter writing competition called "Thank A Teacher, Win A Pie Challenge." Students are encouraged to write a thank you letter to a teacher at Harris, or any other school in Bedford County. Mrs. Lawell delivers the letters to the teachers mailboxes at Harris and has the letters for other teachers delivered to them at their schools. Many letters make you laugh, most make you smile, some make you cry, others make you do all three. This year, there were five winners, • Camila Nunez • Yaretzi Sanchez (pictured) • Perla Perez (pictuted) • Elizabeth Alcala • Ayonna McCullough (pictured) We are thankful to Mrs. Lawell for coordinating this wonderful competition and we are also thankful for all of the students who participated and for during us how to #SoarAboveTheRest.
